Sinusitis

Acupuncture for Sinusitis

At New Leaf Acupuncture in Dublin, we encounter many people each year with sinus problems who have struggled to find relief elsewhere. Fortunately, acupuncture for sinusitis proves highly effective. It helps improve breathing by opening nasal passages through the use of needles on acupuncture points near the nose and other parts of the body. Different points are used for various types of sinusitis, as diagnosed using Chinese techniques. In some cases, sinusitis can persist indefinitely, and treatments like antibiotics lose their effectiveness over time. Consequently, acupuncture for sinusitis is becoming increasingly popular as a treatment option.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

Sinusitis affects four pairs of sinuses, with the pairs located between the eyes and either side of the nose being most prone to infection and inflammation.

The primary symptoms of sinusitis include a purulent, yellow nasal discharge from both the front and back of the nose (into the throat), a stuffy nose, a frontal headache, facial pain, and a feeling of muzziness and heaviness in the head. The sinuses may also be tender to touch.

Chronic sinusitis is often caused by repeated infections from common cold or influenza viruses. Anatomical factors contribute to this condition. The openings into the nasal cavity are narrow, and if inflammation is already present, further infection and inflammation can lead to blockage. This results in fluid stagnation in the nose and sinuses.

How Acupuncture Benefits the Sinuses

In Chinese medicine, repeated invasions of common cold and influenza viruses occur due to weakened Lung energy. These infections also interfere with the movement of Lung energy, causing fluids in the nose and sinuses to accumulate.

Diet can also play a significant role in the development of chronic sinusitis. Consuming difficult-to-digest foods regularly can lead to the development and retention of Phlegm, which increases the risk of sinusitis.

Acupuncture treatment for sinusitis is based on the presenting symptoms. When symptoms are acute, treatment aims to clear phlegm from the nasal cavities and regulate Lung energy. If the phlegm is yellow, indicating heat, specific points are selected to help the body expel this heat.

During symptom-free periods or when symptoms are mild, acupuncture treatment focuses on strengthening Lung energy to prevent pathogen invasion (viruses). Other points are chosen based on the body’s imbalance. Additionally, strengthening the digestive system and avoiding difficult-to-digest foods are important.

Initially, treatment would be weekly.
